Have you noticed a payment of around $40 showing up in your account from Facebook? If you have, rest assured that it’s legitimate. In fact, many users have been receiving these payments over the past few days, and they are part of a class action lawsuit settlement Facebook agreed to in 2022. Here’s everything you need to know about these payments.

Why Did I Get a Payment from Facebook?

The payments you’re receiving are a result of a class action lawsuit that Facebook settled in 2022. Specifically, the lawsuit claimed that between April 22, 2010, and September 26, 2011, Facebook improperly tracked its users’ activities around the web using its “Like” button on non-Facebook websites.

Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, denied any wrongdoing but decided to settle the case rather than fight it in court. As part of the settlement, Facebook agreed to pay $90 million, which will be distributed to eligible users in the United States after attorney fees and other costs are deducted.

How Much Is the Facebook Settlement Payment?

Many users have reported receiving a settlement payment of about $40.67. This amount has been consistent among several users. Some have shared their experiences on social media platforms such as Reddit and X (formerly Twitter). Specifically, the payments are coming from the “Facebook Internet Tracking Settlement Administrator.”

The settlement’s effective date was February 24, 2025. Therefore as per the terms of the settlement, payments were scheduled to be sent within 45 days of that date, which means the funds began to be distributed on April 10, 2025.

How Are People Being Paid?

If you were part of the settlement and submitted a claim, you had the option to choose how you wanted to receive your payment. Specifically, the payment options available included:

  • PayPal
  • Venmo
  • Virtual Prepaid Card
  • Zelle
  • Check mailed to your provided address

Many users have reported receiving their payments via PayPal, Venmo, or virtual cards.

Can I Still Submit a Claim?

Unfortunately, no. All claims had to be submitted by September 22, 2022. If you didn’t submit a claim by then, you are not eligible for the payment.
