The Tamil Nadu Cyber Crime Wing has issued an urgent warning to the public about fake social media accounts impersonating the agency. These fraudulent accounts have been using the Cyber Crime Wing’s official name and logo to mislead users, creating confusion. According to the Cyber Crime Wing, they have identified 10 fake Instagram accounts and four fake X accounts. All of which aimed to mimic official government-issued content.

Impersonation of Government Entities on Social Media

The Cyber Crime Wing is taking the issue seriously and has acted quickly to report these fake accounts to the respective social media platforms. “Impersonation of government entities is a serious matter, and we have taken swift action to investigate and mitigate the damage caused by these fake accounts,” said Sandeep Mittal, Additional Director-General of Police, Cyber Crime Wing.

Mittal also cautioned the public about the potential risks posed by these fake accounts. “We urge people to be cautious about the information shared by these accounts. The official Tamil Nadu Cyber Crime Wing has only one verified account on each of the platforms – Facebook, Instagram, and X (@tncybercrimeoff).”

How to Stay Safe and Verify Authenticity

The Cyber Crime Wing is actively monitoring social media platforms to identify further instances of impersonation. They encourage the public to always verify the authenticity of social media accounts claiming to be from government departments. If in doubt, users should refrain from responding or sharing personal information.

The public is advised to follow the official social media handles of the Tamil Nadu Cyber Crime Wing for accurate information and updates. The verified accounts of the Cyber Crime Wing are as follows:

  • Facebook: @tncybercrimeoff
  • Instagram: @tncybercrimeoff
  • X: @tncybercrimeoff

The Tamil Nadu Cyber Crime Wing remains vigilant in its efforts to protect the public from online fraud and cybercrimes.
