The Ministry of Electronics & IT (MeitY) is working to finalize the draft rules for India’s Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act. S. Krishnan, the secretary of MeitY, emphasized the ongoing efforts to address the complexities of online content regulation and the rapid growth of AI. As the final rules for the DPDP Act undergo review, the government is sifting through extensive feedback before making the next move.

Analyzing extensive inputs for the DPDP Act rules.

Krishnan shared with TOI that the ministry has received extensive inputs on the draft rules. “We’ve got extensive inputs on the rules. We have to analyze them, take views on different elements, go back and consult other departments, and make other necessary changes before finalizing them. It will take us a couple of months to digest all of that,” he stated. This process is crucial to ensure the rules meet the evolving needs of data protection.

Regulating Online Content with Technology

The government is also focusing on managing the growing influence of digital platforms, in addition to the DPDP Act. Krishnan highlighted that India already has the legal authority to block content when needed. “India has laws today where we can actually block content if needed. Section 69A of the IT Act gives us those powers. If content violates other laws but doesn’t fall within 69A, provisions under Section 79 can be applied,” Krishnan explained.

However, the challenge is not just about having laws in place. It is about keeping up with the rapid pace of technological advancements. “When technology keeps getting upgraded, the protections against technology also need to be worked on. Use technology to counter technology,” Krishnan added.

Focus on Cybersecurity and AI in India’s Digital Framework

Another priority for the government is the intersection of AI and cybersecurity. Krishnan described cybersecurity as his biggest concern, saying, “For us, cybersecurity is one of the highest priorities. If you ask me what keeps me up at night, it’s cybersecurity. You never know what will happen,” This reflects the government’s commitment to staying ahead of emerging threats in the digital landscape.

In conclusion, the government is finalizing the DPDP Act rules with careful consideration. The government is also ensuring that the country’s cybersecurity framework evolves to address the challenges of an increasingly digital world. With AI’s growing role, the finalization of these rules becomes even more crucial.
