Gujarat Police Offers Cybersecurity Audits to Businesses Through New Sentinel Lab
In February, CCTV footage from hospitals in Rajkot leaked, raising serious privacy concerns in the city of Rajkot, Gujarat. The footage showed sensitive scenes, including women undergoing gynecological exams. This caused major concern among the public about how secure such footage really is.
Investigators found that the hospitals had failed to properly protect their camera systems. Specifically, problems like outdated software, lack of encryption, and other technical issues made it easier for hackers to break in and access the live feed. As a result, the security vulnerabilities raised serious concerns about patient privacy and data protection.
According to cybersecurity experts, anything connected to the internet can be targeted by hackers. Businesses and factories are especially at risk because any data theft can damage their reputation or cause huge losses. That’s why it’s important to take strong steps to protect data.
To help prevent such cyberattacks, the police have launched a new service to offer cybersecurity audits for companies. Gujarat’s first Sentinel Cybercrime Lab, located in Rajkot, will provide this service to industries and businesses across the state.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Parthrajsinh Gohil explained the process:
“We have created a standard procedure for these audits. When a company applies for an audit, our team will first review the setup and provide a cost estimate. If the company agrees, both sides will sign an agreement, and then we’ll carry out the full cybersecurity check.”
The minimum cost for the audit is ₹50,000, and final pricing depends on how complex the company’s IT system is. Gohil also stated that the lab does not aim to make a profit and will charge only enough to cover its operational costs.
A team of police cybercrime officers and external cybersecurity professionals staff the lab. Together, they will check an organization’s computer systems, spot weaknesses, and suggest practical steps to improve protection.
During the audit, they will examine different areas including:
- Network security
- Software and app security
- Who has access to what data
- How data is stored and protected
- Overall security of the company’s digital systems
Once the audit is complete, the team will give a full report detailing all the problems they found and what the company should do to fix them. Authorities expect this initiative to lower the risk of future cyberattacks.
