HDFC Bank has warned its customers to stay alert about a growing scam involving fake mobile apps known as APK frauds. These scams are mainly targeting Android phone users.
How the scam works:
Scammers pretend to be from trusted sources like the bank, police, RTO, or government offices. They contact people through messages, emails, or phone calls and create a sense of urgency. Common excuses include:
- Updating KYC details
- Paying traffic fines
- Getting an income tax refund
They send a message with a link to download an APK file. When the victim downloads and opens the file, a harmful app is installed secretly. This app lets the scammer control the victim’s phone without their knowledge. Soon after, money starts disappearing from the victim’s bank account.
Sometimes, these fake apps show logos and designs that look real. Victims are tricked into entering important details like bank account numbers, ATM card info, or OTPs. All of this data is instantly stolen.
How to stay safe:
- Never click on unknown links or download files from unverified messages or emails.
- Don’t install apps based on phone calls from unknown people.
- Use antivirus software to protect your phone.
- Always download apps only from trusted places like the Google Play Store.
- If you get a suspicious message, report it on the Chakshu portal or the Sanchar Saathi mobile app.
Other scams to be aware of:
HDFC Bank also warned about other rising scams like:
- Digital Arrest Fraud – Scammers pose as police or government officers and threaten people with a fake arrest warrant.
- Investment Scams – Fraudsters offer very high returns on fake investments in shares, IPOs, or cryptocurrency. They promote these scams heavily on social media.
Scammers usually use three tricks to trap people:
- Greed – Promising easy money
- Threats – Scaring people with legal or financial trouble
- Help – Pretending to offer help during urgent situations
