Uttar Pradesh to Launch AI-Based Road Safety System After Centre’s Clearance

Lucknow – After receiving approval from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), Uttar Pradesh will introduce India’s first artificial intelligence-powered road safety system. The goal is to reduce accidents and boost enforcement using real-time data and predictive analytics.

Transport Commissioner Brajesh Narain Singh confirmed this will be the first-ever AI project of its kind led by a state transport department in India.

“ITI Limited, a public sector unit, will execute the pilot project at no cost in partnership with mLogica, a global technology company. Meanwhile, the Centre has allowed the project to proceed, provided it follows all existing traffic laws, rules, and digital enforcement procedures under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, and Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989. Moreover, the Centre will not bear any financial burden for the project.”

The state government has already allocated ₹10 crore in its 2025–26 budget to support a broader move toward data-driven governance in transport services. This pilot will serve as the first step.

How It Will Work

The AI system will bring together data from various sources such as accident records, weather conditions, vehicle tracking, driver history, and road layouts. The team will use the data over six weeks to build AI models that identify accident-prone areas, predict risks, and assist decision-makers through live dashboards.

The system will also send early warnings about tax dues, document expiry, and traffic violations, helping officers take immediate action. It will support fraud detection, map vehicles, and assess risks, while giving officials a unified digital view of all transport-related data.

If the pilot succeeds, the government will extend the system to essential functions such as issuing licenses and permits, enforcing rules, managing revenue, and connecting it with platforms like Vahan and Sarathi.

“The aim is to make Uttar Pradesh a national leader in using technology for better governance,” Singh said. “We’re not just targeting road safety. We want to bring AI into every part of our transport operations.”

What’s Next

The ITI–mLogica team will begin work immediately with the department’s IT, enforcement, and road safety divisions. Once the pilot ends, the project team will submit a final report to MoRTH and will undergo regular audits to ensure compliance with privacy, security, and legal standards.

“We believe this system will lead to fewer accidents, more efficient enforcement, and faster services for the people,” Singh added.
