In a groundbreaking move to simplify identity verification, the Union Minister of Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, has announced that a new Aadhaar app will soon be launched by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). This new app aims to eliminate the need for users to carry physical or photocopied versions of their Aadhaar card, making digital identity verification more convenient and secure.

A New App for Simplified Verification

The upcoming app will harness the power of facial recognition technology and QR codes. It will allow users to authenticate their identity with ease. The new version will also feature a redesigned interface compared to the existing mAadhaar app, as reported by Hindustan Times. Currently in the beta testing phase, the app is expected to be available for public use soon.

Minister Vaishnaw shared the news on X (formerly Twitter), saying: “Now with just a tap, users can share only the necessary data, giving them complete control over their personal information – New Aadhaar App (in beta testing phase). Aadhaar verification becomes as simple as making a UPI payment. Users can now digitally verify and share their Aadhaar details while ensuring their privacy. Simply scan a QR code or use a requesting application.”

Consent Foundation

He emphasized a key feature of the new Aadhaar App, which will eliminate the need for users to provide scanned or printed copies of their Aadhaar cards. “No more scanned & printed copies,” he wrote, signaling the end of the hassle of handling physical documents.

Role of Face Authentication in the New Aadhaar App

The app’s digital approach is also expected to streamline identity verification in various everyday scenarios. Such as check-ins at hotels, stores, and during travel. Once fully rolled out, the app will allow users to complete these verifications digitally. This will ensure a faster and more secure process. Vaishnaw stressed that the app would be entirely digital and secure. It will require the user’s consent before sharing any personal data.

A particularly notable feature of the new Aadhaar app is its integration of Aadhaar Face Authentication. This feature has already gained significant traction, with the UIDAI reporting over 15 crore transactions per month across various sectors. As stated by UIDAI, “This app is an early adopters’ release for a small group of users, including all the registered participants of this Aadhaar Samvaad event. Based on the feedback received from users and ecosystem partners, UIDAI will soon make it accessible to all.”

This new app marks a significant step towards transforming the way we handle digital identity, giving users more control over their personal data while ensuring a seamless verification process.
